Most corrosion cases are caused by deposits from previous manufacturing processes – residues of washing liquids, metalworking fluids, dust, acid or base activators or passivators during different coating types or deposits of acid gases during the process.

Customers always look for an issue in their packaging (“it was packed in VCI, so why should it be corroded?”). The real source of corrosion happens before packaging, usually in the washing line, caused by poor maintenance, different materials being washed or simply by the wrong choice of product.
Fluids used during the manufacturing process can be basically split into 3 main groups:
- Washing step
- Rinsing step
- Protective coatings
For each group, we have a selected line of products that can be used for specific operations according your requirements. While protective liquids are optional for rust prevention, cleaners should always be used.
For the liquids in your production line to be compatible with and to increase the effect of VCI film, we recommend starting backwards. The main influence on your corrosive environment is always the last treatment in the chain. Include protective liquids in your multi chamber washing machines, where cleaner can be used during rinsing, and protective coatings for rust prevention can be applied.
To keep the risk of any corrosion potential as low as possible, it’s critical to maintain all liquids used in your manufacturing process. This can be done in several ways, from basic field checks with a refractometer to simple corrosion testing based on DIN 51360 (cast iron chip test), and laboratory testing of samples from machines.
During production, there’s always a loss of water based fluids, partly caused by drag-out (usually about 10%) but mainly due to evaporation (usually about 90%). This evaporation however means all residues and contamination from previous processes stays in, while only the water evaporates. Simply pouring the missing water and adding more concentrate is systematically increasing the amount of contamination. Therefore, the whole machine must be cleaned and fresh mixture added occasionally. This moment is based on many elements such as experience, severity of production, contamination during the previous process, etc. and should be always determined by a specialist.
